Church

Alongside the mills, St. Catherine's Church is a landmark of Martfeld.

It is also included in the municipal coat of arms. A document issued by Pope Alexander III on May 29, 1179 is the first mention of an ecclesiastical building in Martfeld. This chapel mentioned here developed into its own church by 1396 at the latest. The parish has always coincided with the area of the parish of Martfeld. In 1809, the parish decided to demolish the old church and replace it with a new building. Construction work lasted from 1810 to 1813, with the tower only taking on its current appearance in 1836. To this day, several conversions, renovations and modernizations have been carried out.

A major event was the church fire on 17 May 1998, which destroyed part of the eastern section of the church. However, the rebuilt church was rededicated in 2000. From June 2010 to June 2011, the 200th anniversary celebrations took place on a grand scale to mark the aforementioned rebuilding of the church.
