Italian frescoes, Dutch mill and the giant from Holschenböhl on the valley sand terraces.

Signposted cycle route in the joint municipality of Thedinghausen: Riede is a very old settlement on the sandy terrace of the Weser glacial valley, on which Felde, Emtinghausen and Bahlum are also located. Riede was first mentioned in a document in 1054 and the formerly independent municipalities of Riede and Felde belonged to the county of Hoya until the regional reform in 1972. Emtinghausen, first mentioned in a document in 1260, belonged to the district of Braunschweig as an exclave until 1972. Even today, tractors with SY or BS license plates can still be found in Riede and Emtinghausen.

1. Emtinghausen mill
The Galerieholländer windmill, which was extensively renovated with EU funding, was officially
inaugurated in 2010 as part of the 750th anniversary celebrations of the municipalities of Emtinghausen and Bahlum. Today, the mill is used as a meeting place for events, weddings and guided tours by the Emtinghausen-Bahlum village association. At the crossroads in Emtinghausen there used to be the "Zum Götzen" restaurant with a large hall, the Lange petrol station and plumber's, the Böhlke bakery and the Graf hairdresser. The dairy, also located at the crossroads, was in operation until 1969. Today, the building houses a cucumber factory.

2. Emtinghausen village square
There was still an elementary school in Emtinghausen until 1972. The bell tower on the village square in Schulstraße still bears witness to this time. There
is also a monument in honor of the Battle of Leipzig from 1913. Today, the old school is used as a daycare center with an adjoining crèche for the
littlest children. Adjacent to it is the gymnasium built in 1973, including outdoor sports facilities.

3. Fruit and vegetable plantations
In the fields in Emtinghausen, Felde and Donnerstedt you will find top-quality produce grown locally. Depending on the season, you can buy regional produce such as asparagus, strawberries, cherries, apples, pears, raspberries, plums, potatoes and more in the farm stores or at the weekly markets. From July to September, you have the opportunity to pick different types of fruit yourself. It s worth visiting Schröder's Plantagencafé under apple trees.

4. St. Andreas Church Riede
One of the most beautiful churches in the joint municipality of Thedinghausen is the St. Andreas Church in Riede. Impressive fresco paintings in Italian technique fill almost all the vaults of the 15th century nave. The central figure of all the groups of figures is the Christ enthroned in the vault above the altar as the Judge of the World on the Day of Judgement. All the frescoes were found under a thick layer of plaster during the renovation in 1900, carefully uncovered, supplemented in some parts and the colors refreshed. They are said to date from shortly after 1350. These frescoes alone make a visit to Riede church worthwhile.

5. Riede village centre
On the corner of Bremer Straße and Randermannsweg is the listed house of the former innkeeper Heinrich Randermann, built in 1900. From 1964 to 1991, Hermann and Käte Iden ran a store and an inn with a hall there. In front of the former Diers bakery is the former memorial square. In place of the monument is a large boulder with the coat of arms of the municipality of Riede.

6. Old Riede fire station
The old fire station was the home of the local fire department until it was rebuilt in 2000. Today it is used as a community center with a library.

7. Holschenböhl
According to legend, the unusual name originated from the fact that a giant had his clog (Low German
"Holschen") full of sand on his hikes through the Weser glacial valley and emptied it where the Holschenböhl restaurant is located today.

The Emtinghausen-Riede tour can also be found at Komoot.
