Historical cemetery Sculpture

The town of Verden has maintained a special cemetery tradition for more than 200 years: there is a grave in the cathedral cemetery that stands out due to its fencing: the "Goldmann grave". It tells a very special story.

On May 11, 1818, Franz Goldmann died in a hunting accident at the age of just 20. His father, Christoph Goldmann, has kept his son's memory alive ever since through a legacy, for which he once donated 1,000 thalers to the town. This legacy is still being fulfilled today:

Every year on May 10, the grave site is decorated with a wrought-iron border by a "blameless and virtuous bride" who will marry on May 11, the anniversary of Franz Goldmann's death. In return, the bride is to receive 30 thalers (around 45 euros today).

The back of the gravestone reads: "Oh young man reading this, learn to handle firearms with care if you want to prevent your parents from suffering and complete your life's career in accordance with the wise institution of the great creator of the world."
