The Weser is dammed up here. Ships can overcome the difference in height through the lock. It is one of six barrages on the Middle Weser that regulate the water flow.
The barrage at Weser kilometer 308.8 was built with the current weir from 1931 to 1933 as the second barrage on the Middle Weser in order to keep the water level as constant as possible and make the waterway passable for large ships.
The run-of-river power station belonging to the barrage was built between 1911 and 1913. The hydropower plant was built by the Prussian state and operated from 1927 by the company PreußenElektra, which was merged into E.ON Wasserkraft GmbH in 2000. Following a share swap with the Norwegian energy group Statkraft, the latter has owned and operated the power plant since January 1, 2009. All other run-of-river power plants in the Mittelweser are operated from the power plant in Dörverden.
