An approx. 40 km long circular tour along the Weser cycle path between Verden and Achim.
Discover part of the Weser Cycle Path as a circular route on the main and alternative route. You can change sides of the Weser several times and determine the length of your cycle tour yourself.
Coming from Verden, you have the option of crossing the Weser twice to get to Thedinghausen on the alternative route. First via the Intscheder Wehr or later with the ferry "Gentsiet" (weekends, May to October).
Verden an der Aller developed from several settlement centers as early as the 8th century. The name comes from "ford" or "ferry". The town became a bishop's see in the 9th century. Verden was already a place of jurisdiction before Christianization. During the Saxon Wars, the "Bloodbath of Verden" took place here: Around 4,500 rebellious Saxons are said to have been executed by Charlemagne in 782. The Saxon Grove still commemorates this today.
The Mariae et Ceciliae Cathedral is considered the city's landmark. Built between 1290 and 1490, it is the first Gothic cathedral in Lower Saxony. Worth seeing are the cloister, the Levite's chair and the baptismal font. Other historical buildings include St. Andrew's Church from the 12th century, St. John's Church built around 1150 and the baroque town hall with its tower from 1903.
The history of the town is on display in the cathedral's canons' house and everything to do with horses in the German Horse Museum. From the prehistoric horse 55 million years ago to historical riding and driving equipment and modern tournament sport.
The cycle path leads along the lock canal past the Romanesque St. Sigismund's Church in Daverden towards Achim. Shortly before Achim is Etelsen, famous for its castle. It was built in 1886 in the neo-Renaissance style. Conrad Wilhelm Hase erected the neo-Gothic mausoleum in the castle park as early as 1873. The castle park was modernized around 1900 by Friedrich Kreiß from Braunschweig. There's always something going on here! Summer concerts, exhibitions, theater performances, readings and vocal performances. Civil weddings are also possible at Etelsen Castle.
A few kilometers further on you will reach the famous Badener Berge in Achim-Baden. Legend has it that pirate Klaus Störtebeker once hid here. Achim is derived from "Acheim", meaning "place by the water". The pedestrian zone of this town of 30,000 inhabitants is a charming mix of modern and old architecture, where the weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays traditionally brings crisp freshness. The Clüverhaus, St. Laurentius Church, Pforthaus and Bauernviertel are the sights.
Your tour now takes you over the Weser Bridge into the joint municipality of Thedinghausen. A detour to Erbhof Castle in Thedinghausen is worthwhile! You return to Verden via Morsum and Blender (windmill).
You can also find the tour at Komoot.
