The Verden fountain is a spring in the city forest;
It was first mentioned in 1670. Legend has it that a man suffering from stomach cramps drank the spring water in 1744. And he felt better. According to an investigation, it was "weakly earthy-saline iron water". These mineral waters help with gout, rheumatism and sciatica pain. Gerhard Matthäus Friedrich Brawe, Verden's court physician, had the spring enclosed with ashlars.
Verden as a spa town
The first overnight accommodation was created in 1784. In the first season, there were already 650 spa guests at the Gesundbrunnen. Further accommodation was built. Gradually, an area was created with several bathhouses and public houses, promenades, a theater and a casino. The spa experienced its heyday in the 1820s and 1830s.
Today, the spring has mostly dried up and the water is undrinkable.
